Adding devices

Install the agent on Windows and Linux, silently or by hand, and what to exclude in your security software.

Open Devices › Add a computer, pick the site, then use the installer (Windows) or the one-line command (Linux). The machine appears under that site within a minute. The install code and the Linux command carry the site's install key, so treat them like a password: anyone with them can add machines to that site.

Windows

Download RMM-Installer.exe gives you one signed installer that works for every site. Next to it is the site's install code (it starts with RMM1- and holds your server address and the site's key).

  • By hand: run RMM-Installer.exe, paste the install code, check the site it shows, and click through.
  • Silently (your PSA, a GPO, a deployment tool), as administrator or SYSTEM: RMM-Installer.exe /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES /CODE=RMM1-... (exit code 0 = installed).
  • Running it again on a machine that already has the agent upgrades or repairs it.
  • PowerShell instead (no installer, as administrator or SYSTEM): Add a computer also shows a one-line command that downloads the agent and installs it into the site, and the same line wrapped for Proxmox (qm guest exec through the QEMU guest agent, run on the Proxmox node; put in the VM ID).

The same file can live on a share or in your PSA's script library: only the install code changes per site. (Servers run with Docker Compose built from source don't have the signed installer; their Add a computer page offers a per-site agent download instead.)

The agent installs as the service NeverLapse RMM Agent in C:\Program Files\NeverLapse RMM Agent\. All our files are code-signed by Live Information Technology Consulting Group, LLC.

Linux

Paste the command from Add a computer on the machine:

curl -fsSL https://rmm.example.com/i/<site key>/install.sh | sudo bash

It installs the agent to /opt/neverlapse-rmm as the systemd service neverlapse-rmm-agent. Supported: current Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL / Rocky / Alma, and other systemd distributions on x86-64 or ARM64.

Security software

Add these exclusions in your EDR / antivirus before installing agents. Remote-support tools are a common target for behaviour-based protection, and an EDR that quarantines the agent leaves the machine unmonitored.

Windows Linux
C:\Program Files\NeverLapse RMM Agent\ /opt/neverlapse-rmm/
C:\Program Files\NeverLapse\NeverLapseRemoteSupport\
C:\Windows\SystemTemp\neverlapse-rmm-scripts\ (newer Windows) and C:\Windows\Temp\neverlapse-rmm-scripts\

Where your product supports it, also trust the signer Live Information Technology Consulting Group, LLC (by name, not by certificate thumbprint: the signing certificate is renewed every few days). Use an exclusion that covers behaviour monitoring too, not just file scanning.

Restarting and shutting down

Restart / shut down on a machine's page restarts it or shuts it down through the agent, without connecting to it:

  • Now, or in 5 minutes to 4 hours with a warning for whoever is logged on (a Windows pop-up, a wall message on Linux). Write your own message or leave the default ("Your IT team will restart this computer in ... Please save your work.").
  • While a countdown runs, the machine's page shows when it will happen and who asked, with Cancel it.
  • Several at once (admins): select machines on the device list and choose Restart / shut down; that dialog can also cancel their countdowns.
  • An offline machine gets the request when it comes back, within 10 minutes; after that it is dropped.
  • Needs agent 1.3.0 or later; older agents say "update the agent first" (see Agent updates below).
  • Every request and the agent's answer are in Activity.

Moving and removing machines

  • To another site or group: select it on the device list and use Move to…, or use its Settings tab. Installing again with another site's installer also moves it.
  • Delete (device Settings tab): the agent uninstalls itself, then the machine disappears from the list. An offline machine shows Removing until it comes back; Remove now takes it off the list without waiting.
  • On the computer itself (Windows): NeverLapse RMM Agent is listed in Apps & features / Programs and Features. Uninstall there asks for admin rights and a confirmation, removes the agent and remote support, and takes the machine off the RMM (Activity shows who uninstalled it). Silent, for scripts: "C:\Program Files\NeverLapse RMM Agent\neverlapse-rmm-agent.exe" uninstall --from-apps --quiet.

Agent updates

When a newer agent is available, the device list shows update next to the machine. Update one machine from its page, select several and choose Update agent, or turn on Update agents automatically in Settings. Monitoring pauses for a few seconds while the agent restarts.
