Monitoring and templates

Memory, disks, services and offline checks, thresholds, and templates that set them for many machines at once.

Every machine with the agent reports every minute. NeverLapse watches four things:

Check Alerts when
Offline The agent hasn't checked in for a few minutes (10 by default)
Memory Memory use stays above its threshold for a set time (90% for 15 minutes by default)
Disks A disk is fuller than its threshold (90% by default)
Services A service you chose to watch is not running for longer than its grace time (3 minutes by default). On Linux this includes systemd units and Docker containers.

There is deliberately no CPU alert: short CPU spikes are normal and only create noise.

Each machine also sends an inventory (hardware, operating system, network, installed software) a few times a day. The Software page lists every application across your machines, with versions and where it's installed.

Thresholds: which number wins

The most specific setting wins:

  1. set on the disk itself (device page, Overview tab);
  2. set on the device (Settings tab);
  3. the device's, then its group's, then its site's disk template;
  4. the site's default thresholds;
  5. your global defaults (Settings › Alert thresholds).

You can also ignore a disk (e.g. a backup volume that is always full) and mute a device: its alerts still show in the app but nothing is sent.

Watching services

On a machine's Services tab, select the services to watch. Watch everywhere adds the same service on every other machine of the site that has it. Each service has start / stop / restart buttons and its startup type, with live progress.

Monitoring templates

Templates set monitoring for many machines at once (Monitoring templates in the menu):

  • Services templates belong to one site. They add up: a machine watches the services of its site's template, plus its group's, plus its own. A template only applies a service to machines that actually have it, so one "Windows servers" template is fine for servers with different roles. On a single machine you can still switch a template service off.
  • Disk templates can be shared by every site or belong to one. A default % for every disk plus rules per disk or pattern (C:, /var, /snap/*), first matching rule wins. Here the most specific template wins (device > group

    site).

Apply a template from the template page (Apply to: the whole site, groups or machines), from the Groups page, or on a machine's Settings tab. Changes apply straight away.
