Updates, backups and uninstalling
Updating the server (Settings › Updates or by hand) and agents, what to back up, and removing NeverLapse RMM.
Updating the server
NeverLapse RMM 1.4.0 or newer can see new versions and install them itself: Settings › Updates. It backs up first, and if the new version doesn't start it puts the old one back by itself.
Older servers (1.3.9 and before) don't have the page. Update them once by hand (below) to 1.4.0 or newer; after that, updates can come from the app.
The Updates page
- The version that's installed and the latest version out now, with its release date and what's new.
- Check for updates asks right away. The server also checks by itself once a day.
- A link to all releases, with the notes for each version.
- A release that fixes a security problem is marked as a security update. Install those soon.
When a newer version is out, a banner shows at the top of every page (red for a security update). Checking needs no license; downloading an update needs a working license.
Install an update
Click Install <version> on the Updates page. The server then:
- Downloads the new version from neverlapse.live with its license key.
- Checks the file: its SHA-256 must match the one neverlapse.live published. On Windows it must also carry a valid signature from Live Information Technology Consulting Group, LLC and the right version number. Anything else is refused and nothing is installed.
- Backs up the program, its data folder and the database (a PostgreSQL dump):
to
C:\ProgramData\NeverLapse RMM Updateson Windows,/var/backups/neverlapse-rmm-updateson Linux. The last 2 update backups are kept. - Installs it silently, the same way the installer would.
- Checks the new version answers with the right version number. If it doesn't, it restores the program, the data and the database and starts the old version again.
The web page is away for a minute or two during the update; reload it afterwards. Agents keep working and reconnect on their own.
If the license has run out, was removed or was replaced, the download is refused and the page tells you to fix the license on the License page. See Your license.
Linux: the update runs as root through a systemd unit the package installed, and it fetches the published SHA-256
from neverlapse.live again itself before installing. If the server must reach neverlapse.live at another address, set
UPDATE_SERVER in /etc/neverlapse-rmm-server/update.conf (default https://neverlapse.live).
Docker: a container can't replace itself, so there's no Install button. The Updates page shows when a new
version is out and the command to run on the Docker host: ./setup.sh <rmm name> <remote name> keep with the new
release (see Install with Docker).
Updating by hand
You can always skip the Updates page: download the newest version from your account, back up (below), then:
- Linux: extract the new package and run
sudo ./install.shagain (no options needed; your settings are kept). - Windows: run the new NeverLapseRMM-Server-Setup.exe.
The database is upgraded automatically. Agents keep working during the update and reconnect on their own.
Updating agents
A new server version usually brings a new agent. Machines with an older agent show update on the device list. Update them from the device page, select several and choose Update agent, or turn on Update agents automatically under Settings › Agents and server.
Backups
Back up both:
- The database:
pg_dump neverlapse_rmm(or your usual PostgreSQL backup). - The data folder:
/var/lib/neverlapse-rmm-serveron Linux,C:\ProgramData\NeverLapse RMM Serveron Windows. It holds the keys that decrypt the secrets in the database, plus remote control's data and certificates.
Without the data folder, a restored database can't read its stored secrets, and every machine's remote control has to be set up again. With Hosted by LiveIT, we take care of backups.
Uninstalling
- Linux:
sudo /opt/neverlapse-rmm-server/uninstall.shremoves the software and keeps the database and data; add--purgeto delete them too. - Windows: uninstall NeverLapse RMM Server from Apps & features. It asks whether to delete the database and data
(silent:
/REMOVEDATA=1).
Uninstalling the server does not remove agents from machines: delete the devices in the app first (each agent then uninstalls itself), or uninstall the agent on each machine.
Moving to new hardware? Release the license on the old server's License page (or from your account) before activating it on the new one.
